Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles at the Brattle this weekend

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

For you children of the Eighties, this weekend should hold quite a bit of excitement.

On Friday, January 19 and Saturday, January 20 at Midnight, The Brattle Theatre will screen the feature-length Robotech movie. From what I understand, Mark Hamill and Chase Masterson add their voice talents.

Linda! Linda! Linda! at The Brattle

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

While not anime, any fan of pop Japanese culture cannot afford to miss this movie. Linda!x3 tells the tale of three Japanese schoolgirls and one Korean exchange student covering the Blue Hearts (Japan’s answer to Green Day before the question was asked) for the school festival.

While this genre of feel good, happy ending-type movies are getting a bit redundant in Japan, this movie breathes a bit of fresh air into the genre with great performances by Korean actress Du-na Bae and pop-indie band BaseBallBear’s bassist Shiori Sekine, a subtle undertone of a previous incarnation of the band’s bad breakup and an incredible soundtrack by James Iha. Not to mention an appearance by the World’s Worst Ramones Impersonators Ever.

Music freaks who are old enough should remember the Blue Hearts from their US Tours in 1990 and 1991.

I wish my high school music room had Beat Happening poster…
